Portfolio
This portfolio is a limited sample of my work over the last couple of years of my time at BECA.
A significant portion of my work cannot be shared externally outside of BECA due to their sensitive nature, either as National Infrastructure or due to involving the New Zealand Defense Force or Australian Defense Force. I am also restricted by several commercial NDA’s where I have not yet been permitted to share the project’s results.

Industrial Port Concept 360 Renders

Static VR/360 image was made for the Port Kembla project to help clients understand the new face’s appearance and features. The base of this project was a Revit model exported via Omniverse, cleaned and slightly updated, and then textured using a variation of Stable Diffusion to generate PBR materials. The water was created using Houdini’s ocean tank tools, brought into Solaris LOPS, and rendered via Karma.
Unfinished Industrial Canning & Packing Project
The job was to create a short-form video to run through a new production line and renovations at the site. Inputs were multitudes of files from Beca, the client and third parties federated within Navisworks and Revit.
The project had multiple issues, the most significant being multiple Husk bugs we discovered in Houdini and worked with SideFX to diagnose, model sizes and the computing resources they took, LOD requirements not being followed by third parties, and changing client requirements.
Multiple custom tools had to be scripted and composed to sort and simplify the inputs via metadata/attributes from various third parties and the specialised software they used. After the model had been modified and animated in Houdini’s SOPs they were brought into the Solaris LOP context, where geometry and point transform data USD were generated and referenced back into the main file. MTLX and Arnold PBR materials were applied and rendered out through a USD-Hydra delegate pipeline using Arnold renderer.
Unfortunately the project was canceled before the final rendering and post-production.

Airport Seawall

A short video made in Navisworks using custom parametric seawall models made from concept designs and reality meshes made from Itwin Capture Modeler was processed and then imported into Navisworks. This project was commissioned to help communicate concepts and needs to decision-makers from non-engineering backgrounds.

The sea wall generation tool made from this project was refined and used for other seawall projects, and we are currently looking at how we can leverage Houdini Engine with seawall automation and AI internal tools for automated visual outputs.

Homai Station – AT & BLENNZ
A 3D print of the conceptual design for consultation at the nearby Blind & Low Vision Education Network NZ. The context for the model was highly detailed but broken in apart per polygon after export. I created a tool to fuse sections by attribute, which required correcting, simplifying, and displacing the original model to make it printable. This was so successful that AT is now looking at getting BECA to output at least a basic 3D print for the other 44 rail crossings that are being closed.

Grafton Bridge – Auckland Council

Visualising proposed replacement barrier and pedestrian protection designs on Grafton Bridge for the Auckland Historical Society and Auckland Council consideration. The engineering model was extensively remodeled due to missing details with added normal, basic UV unwrapping and PBR materials. The ground model and surrounding Grafton area were made from layered LINZ and Realmaps ArcGIS data in Infraworks, and imported into Houdini where representative flora was scattered and instanced.

SH25 Slip – Waka Kotahi

A last-minute job request for a client meeting. Completed and rendered in two hours. Made by a layering Lidar local survey data, projected aerial imagery with the engineering model. Equivalent equipment models to the equipment used on site pulled from the Beca visual assets repository.

CAD Model To 3D Printing
Since leaving bECA I have been doing contract work converting CAD/engineering files to Visualisation formats for rendering or 3D printing. my main client has been NZ Duct & FLEX.

Old VFX Projects
Simulations
A strong skill of mine is simulations using houdini. though I haven’t had much cause to make use of it in the last few years its was helpful in doing some basic water and/or sea simulations to highlight issues or benefits of projects to clients. i was also doing a side project to use engineering water simulation data (hyper accurate, but viewed in a 2D format) to fuel 3D water simulations in Houdini for accurate Renders/videos. the result was fairly successful but had to be put to the side after I left BECA.
